Cloud and cloud computing concepts
- In an earlier episode, we touched on the cloud. In this episode, we'll fly into the cloud and understand the concepts common in cloud computing. Let's take a trip through the cloud. What are some advantages of storage in the cloud? There are many advantages to using the cloud. Advantages such as scalability, cost savings, flexibility, collaboration, security, and so many more. First, you have virtually unlimited space. This means that you can add more space if you need it as well, and that's called scalability. Whether you use it for business or personal, cost savings can be recognized through low-cost subscriptions to the cloud. Online collaboration is a great feature of cloud storage. You can share files and content with others around the globe. Cloud providers provide additional security as well for your data. You also have backups to your backups. This is that redundancy that we referred to earlier. Cloud storage sites have redundancies in case of catastrophic occurrence at their facilities. In essence, they have a redundant facility in case the facility has a catastrophic occurrence. For businesses, there are different types of cloud computing options and models. For example, do you need a private cloud environment for only your organization or can you share with another business to maybe save on the cost aspect? This is where public, private, and hybrid cloud models are used. Certain government organizations might not want to have shared space and may have to leverage private cloud for their eyes only. Public cloud, like Microsoft Azure, allows you to access the services through a web browser. The hybrid model is, as you would think, it's a combination of both where public information is available to be in the public cloud, however, certain data and applications are secured in the private cloud, and the data can be shared between them. Now, let's look at cloud service offerings. PaaS, or platform as a service, IaaS, infrastructure as a service, or SaaS, software as a service. There's a great way to look at the different service level offerings of a cloud provider. If we think about pizza as a service metaphor, this helps us understand the level of service that the cloud provider is giving us. For example, in an on-prem, which is more of a traditional setup, that means that you have the computers on site. It means you're doing everything. You provide, in the analogy, you'd be providing the kitchen, the supplies, all of the ingredients, and then you would actually even make the pizza. So if you can kind of correlate that to an on-prem environment in a company, then hopefully that'll connect the dots there. In infrastructure as a service, they might provide the kitchen, so in other words, they might provide the computers themself and the infrastructure to be able to actually access those machines. But you're doing everything else. So you're providing all the ingredients, doing all the cooking, and of course getting to enjoy the pizza as well too, right? Platform as a service, they provide the kitchen and everything necessary other than the toppings and cooking the pizza. And then last but not least, in the SaaS, or software as a service, they're literally doing everything, all you have to do is enjoy the pizza. By the way, I've been on here for quite a while. It's time for lunch, hmm, pizza.
