Troubleshooting device drivers
- [Instructor] So we looked at this diagram earlier on in another session. I just want to revisit it briefly to talk a bit about device drivers, which are down at the bottom of the architecture. So the device driver is a software component provided by Microsoft or by a hardware vendor which glues the operating system's low-level components to a piece of hardware. The hardware might include things like a network adapter, a video adapter, a mouse, a keyboard. Pretty much anything that's a hardware or a tangible component needs a driver. Some of these are provided as default operating system components and some are provided by hardware vendors to provide specific functionalities. If you've got a problem with a device driver, it's possible that the computer may not start correctly or may behave in an unexpected manner or an unacceptable manner.
