- [Instructor] Why back up at all? Well, you could be looking to protect your system against data loss. Data loss can occur for a number of reasons, possibly a user accidentally deletes a file, maybe another user overwrites an existing file instead of saving as a new file, therefore you've lost that original content. Possibly your system gets infected with viruses or other malware, which causes data loss. Or perhaps someone's encrypted a file and you've lost the decryption certificates, so you're unable to access the content. There may be other reasons, but you're looking to protect your system against data loss. Version recovery is also important, that rather gets into the whole overwriting of course, but if you're using some sort of version management system, then you will be able to recover previous versions.
