Understanding the Linux operating system
- If you want to learn Linux, it makes sense to know a little bit about where it's coming from. Linux originates from the UNIX operating system, and the UNIX operating system was the main operating system in the 1980s mainly. The first steps for Linux were in 1991 with the Kernel, which is the heart of the operating system, that was created by the Linux founder, Linux Torvalds. This kernel was joined with other open-source utilities, and because of its open-source nature, different solutions exist to perform the same task. That's something that you need to keep in mind while working with Linux. There is never just one solution. You have a choice for many, many features. Now, being open-source, Linux users can compose their own working Linux system, but that's a lot of work. And for that reason, distributions were created.
