What you can learn
- [Instructor] In this course, we have four primary topics: wireless networks, services, security and virtualization. First, we'll consider wireless networking and that's becoming more and more important as we have an increasing number of devices connecting wirelessly. As just a few examples, we have smartphones, TVs, refrigerators, laptops, smart light bulbs. They can all connect to the network wirelessly and in our discussion, you'll learn about the frequencies used by wireless networks, how antennas work. You'll learn about different wireless topologies and how to protect our wireless networks from a malicious user. Next, we'll consider a collection of network services. As a couple of examples, you'll learn how DNS or domain name system can take a relatively easy to remember name and convert that into a not so easy to remember IP address. You'll learn how a device can dynamically obtain its IP address information using DHCP or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Next, we'll examine network security, beginning with a look at some of the major security threats to our networks today. Then we'll focus on how to better protect our Cisco routers and switches using access control lists or ACLs and the port security feature. And finally, in this course, you'll see how to virtualize network components such as network servers and routers and we'll discuss how software-defined in networking or SDN is dramatically shifting the landscape of what it means to be a network engineer. And while it's great if you happen to have access to physical gear to practice on, that's not your only option. In fact, in our next video, I'll show you a few different options for getting your hands dirty with a Cisco gear. I'll see you in that video in just a moment.
