Lesson 2: Network Time Protocol (NTP)

Lesson 2: Network Time Protocol (NTP)

(gentle upbeat music) - [Instructor] The network service we're going to be covering in this video is NTP, the Network Time Protocol, and NTP is going to allow us to synchronize our devices on our network so they all agree on what time it is. And we're going to begin with the theory of NTP, and we'll see how we can measure how authoritative a time source is. Then we'll take a look at the configuration of NTP, and even though we will probably be pointing to the internet to get our time source, if we wanted to set up an NTP master clock on our network, we can actually do that on a Cisco router. It's not something I would recommend. Cisco routers are not known for having really accurate time. However, in a lab environment, it can be handy to know how to set up an NTP master clock, and we'll do that in the configuration video. Then we'll go to another router in the topology and we'll see how we can tell it to learn time from that NTP master clock, even if they are in different time zones…
