Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP)

Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP)

(bouncy music) - [Instructor] Let's consider a Cisco Proprietary First Hop Redundancy Protocol. It's called HSRP, that's the Hot Standby Router Protocol, And the idea is it's going to give us redundancy for a device's default gateway. For example, consider PC1 on screen. It has an IP address of 10.1.1.100, and it has a default gateway of 10.1.1.1. Well, that default gateway, that represents the router, that gets us off of our local subnet, and that makes that default gateway seem much like a single point of failure. If that default gateway is unavailable, then this PC is not getting off of its local subnet. However, with HSRP, we can have a couple of routers that are capable of acting as 10.1.1.1, and the way that happens is we are virtualizing that default gateway. We have a virtual router, and it's going to have the IP address of 10.1.1.1, and either R1 or R2 could be doing the actual work of forwarding packets off of the local subnet, but the PC does not need to be concerned about…
