Responsible AI model selection practices
- Using AI responsibly is going to include, by necessity, the calculation of environmental impact. And we have some factors here, that models trained on large data sets need more hardware, more powerful hardware, hardware that uses more power. Data centers that house these models often rely on traditional power sources. And an example here would be just GPT-4. It requires tens of megawatt hours of electricity, which is the equivalent of energy used by a car over its entire lifetime. And so being able to be sensitive to environmental impact is going to be important. And there are some sustainable practices that can be observed, like making sure you're taking advantage of efficient algorithms, use models that reduce the amount of training time and energy, consider using a lighter version of a large model instead.
