Understand sections

- [Instructor] We've seen how effective profile views can be for viewing, analyzing, and designing. Section views can be just as effective for linear designs like the roads we've been working with in our example project. Here in the top right view port, you can see the section views that have been created, not just one, but many. In each section view, we see the road surfaces and even a pipeline. How did these section views come to be? It all starts with these blue lines that we see over here in plan view. These are called sample lines. Each sample line tells Civil 3D where to create a section, but that's not all. Within each sample line is information that tells Civil 3D which data sources to sample to create the section view. If I go to sample line properties, you'll see the different data sources that are listed here for this sample line. So as you can see, a lot goes into creating a section view, but because of the dynamic nature of the Civil 3D model and the fact that different objects are aware of each other and can retrieve data from each other, creating these 48 sections is actually pretty easy. You'll spend the next few videos creating the sample lines, choosing the data sources, and creating the section views. So now that you know a little bit about sections, let's jump into the next video, which covers creating sample lines.
