- [Instructor] Governance is essentially a legal concept. It's a method for ensuring companies comply with the law, along with societal norms and ethical and organization values. This video discusses the key international laws that form the foundation of AI data governance. The reason we started this discussion with a focus on international laws is because they acted first, specifically the European Union. The General Data Protection Regulation was the first law to regulate information privacy. The digital age began in earnest in the 1990s with Berners-Lee's invention of the Worldwide Web. The expansion of both the accessibility and capacity of the internet led to the rise of the digital economy and digital society. Europeans have had a legally-protected right to privacy since 1950. The rapid expansion of our digital society posed a threat to that right. In 2016, the European Union passed the world's most comprehensive data privacy law, the GDPR. It became binding law in 2018.
