Silos versus collaboration

- Silos, great for farms, not so great for Agile teams. Most organizations know that silos don't work. So if they know this, why do they continue to develop? In her book, "The Silo Effect: The Peril of Expertise "and the Promise of Breaking Down Barriers", cultural anthropologist-turned-journalist, Gillian Tett, describes how, in every society that anthropologists have ever studied, there is a tendency to use formal, and informal, classification systems, and cultural rules to sort the world into groups and silos. Tett goes on to explain, "Insofar as anyone can tell, "this process of classification is an intrinsic part "of being human." So, good news, silos are ubiquitous and arise out of sheer human nature. But that also means that they are incredibly difficult to dismantle. While silos give us the feeling of control and order, they also come at a cost.
