- In my consulting career, I've run across two types of consultants. The first would be better off as brain surgeons because they aim for high expertise and low touch. You can tell who they are because they never say, "I don't know, but I'll find out." They try to have all the knowledge upfront before they work with clients and tend to work briefly with clients to get requirements and then go off for relatively long periods to develop a solution they think is perfect and their baby. They don't like it when other people question their baby. Their solutions are off the mark in high flux environments, as many things have changed in the client's mind and the situation since their last touchpoint. The second kind of consultant works quite differently. Often engaging with a client saying things like, "I don't know, but I'll find out." "Is this more like what you're looking for?"
