From the course: Advanced Manufacturing: Driving the Next Industrial Revolution

Welcome

(upbeat music) - Welcome to this course on Advanced Manufacturing. My name is Nathan Hartman, and I am the Dauch Family Professor of Advanced Manufacturing at Purdue University, where I'm also the director of the Purdue University Digital Enterprise Center and Co-Executive Director of the Indiana Manufacturing Competitiveness Center. In this course, we will explore the major contours of manufacturing as it exists today and look ahead to where this industry is going. Thanks to advances in technology and the digital revolution, commentators and industry insiders argue that we are entering the fourth industrial revolution, characterized by new digital tools and methods that transform how goods are produced and consumed around the world. Advanced manufacturing methods and the technologies it leverages all pose significant opportunities for American industry and our global trading partners, but there will also be many challenges along the way. This course will highlight some of these challenges and opportunities, including increased speed and efficiency in the manufacturing process, thanks to AI and big data, but also disruption in the workforce and the need for retooling and upskilling opportunities for workers. But you won't hear only from me, you'll hear from other experts from industry and from the policy domain as we explore Industry 4.0 and the advanced manufacturing technologies that will get us there. Let's get started.
