Role Overview


The Controller (Accounting Lead) will own and lead the company’s accounting function while working closely with the Head of Finance on strategic financial initiatives. You will be responsible for building and optimizing the company’s accounting infrastructure, establishing scalable processes, and serving as a strategic partner to leadership on complex accounting and business decisions. This is both a hands-on and strategic leadership role ideal for an experienced accounting professional who thrives in high-growth, fast-moving startup environments.


Key Responsibilities


Day-to-Day Accounting Operations


  • Oversee the full monthly and quarterly close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis.
  • Manage accounts payable, payroll accounting, and vendor relationships.
  • Administer equity processes, including stock option tracking and coordination with equity plan administrators.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting and maintenance of accounting schedules.


Strategic Accounting Leadership


  • Serve as the company’s accounting subject-matter expert, advising on complex transactions, new product launches, and evolving business models.
  • Design and implement scalable accounting systems and processes to support rapid company growth.
  • Partner with FP&A on forecasting, variance analysis, and board reporting.
  • Lead the evaluation and implementation of ERP and spend management systems.
  • Research and apply complex accounting standards, including those relating to revenue recognition, embedded derivatives, and debt facilities.


Cross-Functional Collaboration


  • Partner with Product, Engineering, and Operations to ensure accurate accounting treatment for strategic initiatives.
  • Support fundraising efforts, including due diligence and investor reporting.
  • Create and maintain internal documentation and knowledge-sharing materials for future finance team growth.


Compliance and Controls


  • Maintain audit readiness and liaise with external auditors.
  • Develop and enforce internal controls, accounting policies, and compliance procedures to safeguard financial integrity.


Candidate Profile


Experience & Background


  • 7–12 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial role.
  • Experience in fintech, marketplace, or technology-driven startups is essential.
  • Demonstrated success owning or building an accounting function in a high-growth environment.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge and the ability to apply GAAP to complex transactions.
  • Exposure to FP&A, board reporting, or strategic finance projects preferred.


Technical Skills


  • Advanced Excel or Google Sheets modeling capabilities.
  • Proficiency in modern accounting and finance tools (e.g., QuickBooks, Ramp, Stripe, Rippling).
  • Experience with SQL or BI tools (Tableau, Metabase) is a plus.
