Changes to campaign hierarchy in Campaign Manager

Last updated: 3 weeks ago

To improve clarity across Campaign Manager, we’re updating the naming of entities within the campaign hierarchy. This hierarchy, also known as the ad campaign structure, defines how campaigns are organized and managed. Starting in October 2025, Campaign Manager will rename two out of its four entities: Campaign group and Campaign.

Who can use this feature?

We're gradually changing the campaign hierarchy in Campaign Manager, and you might not currently see the new terms. The new naming convention doesn’t change the functionality of how to create or manage campaigns.

New hierarchy terms

Compare the current and new hierarchy terms in the following table:

Current account entities New account entities (Starting Oct 2025)
Ad account Ad account
Campaign group Campaign
Campaign Ad set
Ad Ad

These updates align with industry-standard naming used in other ad management platforms, making it easier for new advertisers to get started. This also simplifies workflows and navigation, helping you manage campaigns more intuitively and enabling new features to perform at their full potential.

Impact to dynamic URL tracking parameters

In addition to renaming the campaign group and campaign parameters for dynamic URL tracking parameters to correspond with these changes, Campaign Manager is also renaming the creative dynamic URL tracking parameters to use the term Ad.

Compare the current and new dynamic URL tracking parameters in the following table:

You're existing ad sets' (previously named campaigns) URL tracking parameters will automatically update to the new dynamic parameter values. When you create new ad sets or edit existing ad sets, you must use the new dynamic URL tracking parameters.

When reviewing your existing ad sets with dynamic parameters, keep in mind that the parameter value will change while the parameter key remains the same as the previous naming. Learn more about supported URL tracking parameters in Campaign Manager.
