About us

United Way of Greater Houston creates opportunities for every person in our community to thrive. At the heart of our work is ensuring the safety net by providing life-saving services to meet our neighbors’ most basic needs, like food and shelter. We are here to support families and individuals when they are going through crises, like job loss, domestic violence and natural disasters. And, we create a pathway to self-sufficiency and success for our neighbors and our community. We provide the tools, resources and education for families to achieve financial stability and independence, for children to succeed in school and in life and for veterans to rebuild their lives after returning from service. Every day of the year, 24-hours a day, we are the voice of help and hope for those who call our 2-1-1 Texas/United Way HELPLINE. And, we bring stakeholders and our community together to address the most pressing needs in our area, improving the quality of life for everyone in our region. We do it all strategically, transparently and with a focus on results. Join us. www.unitedwayhouston.org

  • 26 stories. One amazing cause. Thanks to this incredible community, the fourth year of Rappel for a Reason was a huge success. With the support of our generous donors, we surpassed our goal and set a new record by raising more than $226,000 to support our neighbors across the region. A heartfelt thank you to the 53 fearless rappelers who went over the edge of the 26-story DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in The Galleria to support United Way of Greater Houston. We’re especially grateful to Amegy Bank Founder Walter Johnson, who celebrated his 90th birthday by taking on the challenge. This event also wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of everyone who donated to support our rappelers and their fundraising efforts. Your belief in this mission powered this record-breaking year. And a special thank-you to our sponsors: PNC, Boardwalk Pipelines, Burns & McDonnell, The Hackett Family Foundation, The Houston Chronicle, DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Houston by the Galleria, Truluck’s Ocean’s Finest Seafood & Crab, Amegy Bank, Frost, Service Corporation International, Valero, and UTHealth Houston. Together, we’re helping families land on their feet — and stay there.
