Decarbonising off-grid homes is one of the toughest challenges on the UK’s path to net zero. Standard solutions like heat pumps and deep retrofits don’t always suit rural areas, where older residences and higher costs call for more flexible, community-driven approaches. Thornton Tomasetti Principal Tim Ashworth and Senior Engineer Ella Schaefer alongside project partners from the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) will join the Energy Innovation Centre on 24 November to share findings from the Decarbonising Off-Grid Communities project, commissioned by Northern Powergrid and Northern Gas Networks. The project identified practical pathways for off-grid households, highlighting what works, what doesn’t, and what’s needed next. We supported the work with expertise in resilient, low-carbon energy systems and community-focused infrastructure planning. The session will explore viable solutions, community insights, and the policy steps needed to close the gap between national ambition and local reality. Register here: https://lnkd.in/e9mnu_sN

The Los Angeles Dodgers have joined the exclusive ranks of Major League Baseball teams who have won back-to-back World Series championships. Equally impressive, our Los Angeles office made a two-peat, winning the inter-office wager two years in a row. It’s tradition at the firm to make a friendly bet when hometown teams compete in a major sports event, and this year, the Dodgers faced off against the Toronto Blue Jays in one of the most exciting World Series matchups in recent memory. The series went the full seven games and was capped by a thrilling ninth-inning rally by the Dodgers, which tied the game and forced extra play. In the 11th, Will Smith hit a historic home run—the first to decide a winner-take-all World Series Game 7 in extra innings—to secure the championship. While Blue Jays fans across the firm may not be thrilled about slipping into Dodger blue—or holding the team’s flag—for the customary payoff photo, there’s no denying the thrill of witnessing baseball history. Congratulations to our Los Angeles colleagues and to Dodgers fans everywhere on another championship year!

The façades at Lancer Square were designed to respond to Kensington’s architectural heritage, reinterpreting familiar materials and proportions in a contemporary context. Sharing some recent photographs of the project, completed in 2021, for which Thornton Tomasetti provided façade engineering services. The mixed-use scheme is located within the Kensington Palace Conservation Area in central London. The 13,600-square-metre development comprises four buildings ranging from four to seven storeys, with private residences, offices, retail space, cafés and a landscaped public courtyard. The design by Squire & Partners uses a natural palette of materials to create a modern interpretation of the area’s architectural character. The façades comprise brick and stone-faced precast concrete panels with glazing infills, full-height balcony doors and Juliet balconies. The two-tone brickwork references the varying brown and red tones of Kensington Palace, while the vertical proportions and stone banding reflect its traditional detailing. #facadeengineering

Congratulations to Project Engineer Sena Kizildemir, Ph.D., who has been named one of Professional Women in Construction, New York's 20 Under 40 honorees. This recognition from PWC’s founding chapter highlights her technical expertise and leadership in advancing the future of critical infrastructure. A specialist in nonlinear finite element analysis, Sena focuses on modeling how structures behave under extreme events, from collapse and fire to blast and impact scenarios. Her simulations support the development of critical infrastructure solutions that safeguard lives, protect assets, and improve performance under the most demanding environments, bridging the gap between advanced research and real-world engineering. At Thornton Tomasetti, her work has been key on such high-profile projects as the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. Her analyses have addressed both structural safety and security, quantifying risks associated with electric vehicle integration, such as thermal runaway, fire propagation and blast events, enabling the team to adopt performance-based safety strategies that also advance decarbonization goals. Sena earned a master’s degree in civil engineering and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University. Recognized for her technical expertise and leadership, she advances the engineering industry through her roles chairing, organizing and presenting at international conferences as well as advocating for greater diversity in technical roles. Well done, Sena!

Stonecutter, a newly completed 13-storey, 245,000-square-foot office building in the City of London, establishes a new benchmark for sustainable development. Constructed on existing foundations and using low-carbon materials, it achieves an embodied carbon score below the London Plan’s aspirational 600 kg CO₂/m² target—the lowest recorded for a major new build in the Square Mile. The strategies behind Stonecutter’s delivery will be the focus of a City Architecture Forum discussion on Thursday, 13 November, at 4:00 p.m., London Technical Director Eddie Jump will join project partners from CO-RE London and tp bennett for the session, which will be followed by a tour of the building: https://lnkd.in/eg4bi-hk

It’s that time of year again, and across Thornton Tomasetti our team members enjoyed getting into the Halloween spirit. Staff in Kansas City took a step back in time with a "Grease" movie theme, while Los Angeles, Portland, Washington, D.C., and London also showed off their creativity, including a standout traffic-cone costume in D.C. Other teams impressed with their pumpkin-carving skills, and in Philadelphia an early visit from trick-or-treaters gave the office a chance to practice their candy-giving technique. Meanwhile, the New York office was visited by a crew of curious ghosts. Whatever your plans are this evening, we hope you have a safe and happy Halloween! #Halloween2025 #Halloween
