Rishabh Sultania, Senior Manager at Synergy Consulting, Inc., shares insights on the Resurgence of Gas Based Power Generation - A Development Advisor’s Perspective Across the world, we are seeing a major shift in the energy sector. Countries are moving away from traditional fossil fuel-based power generation and adopting cleaner energy sources. Renewable energy has now emerged as the primary driver for the development of new utilities in a country’s energy mix. However, one of the key concerns in this transition is maintaining consistent and stable power generation on transmission networks originally supplied by fossil fuel-based power plants. Renewable sources, while clean, are often dependent on weather conditions. As a result, at times, they may not be able to meet the base load demand. During such times, the demand / supply gap would need to be filled by fossil fuel-based plants. This is where gas-based power generation plays an important role. Natural gas is considered a relatively cleaner fossil fuel and offers flexibility in operations. It can ramp up or down quickly, making it ideal for supporting the grid when renewable sources fluctuate. At the same time, new technologies such as green hydrogen or modular nuclear reactors are being explored as long-term clean energy solutions. However, these technologies are evolving and may take years before they can be deployed at scale. Hence, gas-based power generation remains relevant today and continues to serve as an alternative for providing reliable power generation and ensuring grid stability for at least the next two decades. The transaction is valued at AED 3.87 billion (~USD 1.1 billion). PAL Cooling operates eight long-term concessions in Abu Dhabi, serviced by five operational plants. Most recently, he has served as Business Developer for Eastern Africa at Tractebel ENGIE (2020–2025) , where he played a key role in expanding the company’s footprint in the region. His focus areas included market intelligence, strategic prospecting, proposal development, and client engagement across the energy, water, and infrastructure sectors. Prior to this, Ashenafi worked with ENGIE Africa (2018–2020) as a Business Developer in Ethiopia, driving B2B and B2C energy services, mini-grid and solar home system initiatives, and strategic proposals including corporate PPAs and battery storage solutions.
