  • Recently, Southcoast Health, the official orthopedic provider of the Providence College Friars, teamed up with Corey Floyd Jr. and Olivia Rodrigues, standout student-athletes from Providence College’s basketball programs, to bring inspiration, encouragement and energy to children at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater New Bedford and Fall River. For Olivia – a freshman guard majoring in social work – the experience was especially meaningful. “It was an amazing event,” she said. “Being back home and in the Boys and Girls Clubs gyms that I grew up in was so nostalgic, and I was very grateful for the opportunity to share my story with the kids.” A senior majoring in social science, Corey also plays guard for the Friars. “I had great time with the kids of the Boys and Girls Club! They brought me great joy and energy and reminded me of what it was like to be a kid again,” said Corey. “I hope I was able to give them a sense of hope, as they did for me. I truly thank Southcoast Health for allowing me this great opportunity.” Southcoast Health is grateful to partner with Providence College and their talented student athletes to inspire kids at Boys & Girls Clubs. We look forward to more events like this in the future as our collaboration continues to grow. For the story please visit: https://lnkd.in/eGmKjF74

  • One of the most important recent breakthroughs in spinal surgeries is the endoscopic discectomy. The procedure uses a small camera to remove areas of nerve compression through extremely small incisions and helps patients make a quicker recovery – all without staying overnight in the hospital. Based out of Tobey Hospital in Wareham, the endoscopic team includes Richard Dowd, MD, Jessica Keough, NP, Erin Noonan, NP, Aaron Novy, PA, and Matthew Viglianti, PA. Southcoast Health has been providing endoscopic spine surgeries since October of 2024 and have helped over 20 patients to date, Monica Matos being one of them. “Everyone said I was too young to have back issues,” Monica said. When it “ached or seized up,” she managed the discomfort with muscle relaxants. Monica was a candidate for this cutting-edge surgical technique and quickly scheduled the surgery. She could not be happier with the results. “I’m happy to be back to normalcy. Just walking and sitting, you don’t realize how much you take those things for granted until you can’t do them,” Monica remarked.
