  • In this episode of Anatomy of an Artwork, Sotheby’s Anna Di Stasi explains how Frida Kahlo's 'El sueño (La cama)' reveals the tension between life and mortality that defined Kahlo’s art. The masterpiece is one of the artist’s most haunting and introspective works—an image suspended between dream and death, intimacy and surrealism. 'El sueño (La cama)' heads to auction in the Exquisite Corpus: Surrealist Treasures sale, taking place on Thursday 20 November. Watch to learn more: https://lnkd.in/ekUGPpXB

  • Record levels of global participation led to a white-glove result at the 165th Hospices de Beaune charity wine auction, driving the total to €18.8m / $21.5m, the third highest in the auction’s history. The auction’s centerpiece was a unique barrel of Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens, selected as this year’s Pièce des Présidents (The Charity Barrel). Cédric Klapish, Alice Taglioni, Martin Solveig and Vincent Lacoste – luminaries from France’s film and music industries – joined Sotheby’s auctioneer Aurélie Vandevoorde to spur bidding for the barrel among the 700 attendees in the Halle de Beaune. After a 20-minute bidding battle, the final price reached €400,000 – an auction record for a 228-litre Premier Cru Pièce des Présidents. As per tradition, proceeds from the auction support th Hospices Civils de Beaune hospital program. The Charity Barrel’s proceeds will benefit EHCO - Enfance Handicap en Côte d'Or and the Robert-Debré Children’s Brain Institute.

  • The most important drawing by Rembrandt to appear at auction in half a century is coming to Sotheby's New York during Masters Week in February 2026. ‘Young Lion Resting’ is a masterpiece of draughtsmanship. Although Rembrandt’s interest in the king of beasts was clearly pronounced, drawings of this subject are extremely rare: only six Rembrandt drawings of lions are currently known – and ‘Young Lion Resting’ is the only one still in private hands. https://bit.ly/4oqSRb4

  • Maurizio Cattelan’s ‘America’ is coming to auction at #SothebysNewYork this November—and for the first time ever, bids will open at the price of the object’s weight in gold on the day of the sale. Fashioned from just over 100 kilograms of solid 18k gold, ‘America’ has become one of the century’s most influential—and infamous—artworks. See the work installed in a bathroom at New York’s iconic Breuer Building, which opens on 8 November as Sotheby’s new home. Visitors will be invited to view ‘America’ one-by-one in an intimate viewing experience ahead of The Now and Contemporary Evening Auction on 18 November. Read more: https://lnkd.in/ehDQzbvs

  • The 165th Hospices Civils de Beaune Wine Auction will take place – as per tradition – on the third Sunday of November. For the first time, a Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens has been selected as the 2025 Charity Barrel – the unique ‘Presidents’ Barrel’. This year, proceeds from the sale of the charity barrel will benefit the EHCO association – a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping handicapped children in the Côte-d’Or region – and the Robert Debré Children’s Brain Institute. Representing the charities at the auction on 16 November will be luminaries from France’s celebrated film and music industries: actress Alice Taglioni, director Cédric Klapish and DJ Martin Solveig. Bidding opens 31 October http://bit.ly/4o9YbiV
