About us

At the Sierra Club, we believe in the power of togetherness. Together, we remain committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice – a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. As the climate crisis and deeply entrenched systemic racism all fuel inequity, we will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our democracy. By recognizing that our destinies are tied, we continue to name that all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government will move to either advance our collective humanity or to oppress it. Sierra Club is comprised of staff across the country and a network of local chapters that support our grassroots engagement. We are also proud to be a unionized employer, with two labor unions representing more than half of our employees. Please view www.sierraclub.org/careers/ for more information.

  • Years of fire suppression and drier conditions are leading to rare and new fire phenomena. Cyclones and even storms fueled by fires are leveling forests beyond repair. Here's what researchers are saying about how fires can get more destructive in an increasingly hotter and drier world. ✍️ Zack Metcalfe 📸 The aftermath of a wildfire at Jasper National Park, seen from the Athabasca Pass Lookout. | Photo courtesy of Luuk Wijk/Parks Canada 🔗 https://bit.ly/49AIrRs

  • Dry cleaning tends to involve toxic chemicals that aren’t safe for people or our planet. What about those shops advertising petrochemical-free, organic, eco-friendly, green, or nontoxic dry cleaning? Unfortunately, all too often those businesses are just greenwashing their image. ✍️ Jessian Choy 🔗

  • Last weekend, the New York Times ran a story falsely claiming that Sierra Club’s commitment to our values has made our organization weaker and diluted our environmental mission. They could not be more wrong. It’s unfortunate that the Times chose to run a story riddled with inaccuracies and cherry-picked data. The list of their errors is too long for one social post, but read this post for some examples. Let’s be clear. Sierra Club is always learning and evolving how we approach our work, but our values and mission stay constant: ensure everyone in this country has access to clean air, clean water, affordable clean energy, and public lands. We are focused on the work ahead. Onwards, together.

  • Oil and gas companies spent 450 million to get Trump and Congressional Republicans elected so they can continue to poison our communities and climate without consequence.  That's why, on Thursday, Nov 13, we're teaming up with Public Citizen and the Revolving Door Project to share their findings from "Trump's Polluter Playground," to peer behind the curtain at all the ways these corrupt companies are getting their money's worth. This new report details just how deeply these polluting corporations have infiltrated our federal agencies, such as the EPA, and how it's affecting all of us. Join to learn how we can expose the dirty dealings of fossil fuel companies and the politicians in their pockets & take the next steps to stop them. https://lnkd.in/eC6kVDVw

  • This week we are honoring and uplifting the courage, service and sacrifice of our military veterans — and we're especially proud of how getting outside, together, can make a difference. Sierra Club's Military Outdoors team knows that time spent outside is more than recreation — it's restoration, connection, and healing. A few days ago, we gathered for a powerful paddle outing with an incredible group of veterans, active duty members, and community stewards. The 9-mile paddle reminded us just how healing and unifying time on the water can be. The outing was rooted in Indigenous co-stewardship — acknowledging the land, the water, the original stewards, and lifting up Indigenous veterans and women warriors who carry so much strength and history. We celebrate the veterans among us, the women warriors among us, the active duty members among us, and we recommit to getting them outdoors, reconnecting with nature, reclaiming calm, purpose and resilience. https://bit.ly/448FeVE #VeteransDay #ThankYouForYourService #MilitaryOutdoors #NatureHeals

  • Today, we honor the people who have served our country. But for many veterans, coming home can be a hard battle. Isolation, stress, and the challenges of readjusting to civilian life can be overwhelming. That’s why the Sierra Club Military Outdoors Program exists. The program connects veterans, active-duty service members, and their families with the restorative power of nature. Through guided outdoor trips, skill-building, and community, veterans gain more than recreation. They gain hope, healing, and sometimes, even a lifeline. The values that guide our military — integrity, resilience, selfless service, and duty — align deeply with the Sierra Club’s own commitment to justice, collaboration, and transformation. Together, these values fuel our shared mission: to build communities grounded in purpose, healing, and care for one another and the planet. In this video, you’ll hear from veterans who share how stepping out into nature, alongside others who served, helped them rediscover hope and, for some, quite literally saved their lives. • Did you know that 73% percent of people say they get their news from friends, family, or neighbors? (PEW Research) With the holiday season fast approaching, many of us are likely to spend more time with loved ones. For November's Virtual Action Hour, we'll be focusing on having conversations about our climate, public lands, air and water, and other topics related to the environment. Don't miss the last Sierra Club Action Hour of the year! These events are an opportunity to get the latest updates on Trump's destructive agenda and how you can take meaningful action against it alongside thousands of people around the country — in just one hour per month. Together, we can protect people and the places we call home. At the event, we'll walk you through actions step-by-step, provide sample messaging that you can adapt, and answer any questions you have. • In September, Sierra Club chapters and our partners celebrated Latino Conservation Week and National Public Lands Day. We shared our connections to the land and how we will continue to advocate for conservation and outdoor access. At a time when our public lands and communities are consistently threatened, it's more important than ever to speak out to ensure that outdoor experiences remain for us and for future generations. Thank you to everyone who joined an event! Our public lands are under constant attack from Republicans in Congress and the Trump administration, including the proposal to eliminate the "Public Lands Rule" — all so they can hand over more of our public lands to corporate polluters. We only have until November 10 to make our voices heard to stop this giveaway! Submit your comment now: https://sc.org/LandsRule #ProtectPublicLands #HandsOff Thanks to Sierra Club chapters in Maine, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, California, and Nevada (@sierraclubmaine, @sierraclubaz, @sierraclubco, @riograndesierraclub, @sierraclubangeles, @sctoiyabe) for sharing these amazing photos from their respective events!
