From Teacher-Led Training to Classroom Reality: Last summer, our Social Studies team came together around a refreshed curriculum in alignment with state standards. They had a shared goal: build classrooms where history comes alive and students think, question, and engage like historians, citizens, and problem solvers. We are now halfway into the school year and we’re seeing that vision take shape in powerful and meaningful ways. 🇺🇸 US Government: Learning Citizenship by Doing In US Government, students are participating in a Congressional Simulation. To build background knowledge and ensure every student could participate confidently, the teacher used leveled readings, playlists, and scaffolded supports included in the Savvas Learning Company curriculum. Students then worked to: *Serve on committees *Propose and debate bills *Weigh trade-offs and priorities *Communicate with constituents *Navigate federal vs. state powers Students aren’t just reading about the legislative process- they’re stepping into it. 🏭 US History: Inquiry, Primary Sources, and Real-World Thinking In US History class, one group of students launched the year investigating the topic of industry. This unit invites them to explore the rapid changes and ethical questions of America’s Gilded Age. Using the Quest Inquiry Civic Discussion structure, students wrestled with a compelling central question: “Overall, did Andrew Carnegie have a positive influence on America?” The teacher scaffolded the inquiry using: *Five primary sources, assigned to groups *Collaborative analysis on a Padlet *A gallery walk to learn from classmates’ perspectives *A whole-class discussion *A culminating writing task These structures helped students not only examine historical evidence but understand why perspectives differ. Later, students participated in a Harvard Case Study discussion about the 1891 coal strike. Their ability to analyze the complexities of labor, industry, and power showed just how much the Carnegie inquiry had prepared them. The foundational thinking they built earlier in the unit made this rich, nuanced discussion possible. ✨ This Is What Curriculum Looks Like When It Works Across St. Vrain Valley Schools, students are diving deeper into history, asking harder questions, and seeing connections between past and present in ways that feel purposeful and real.
