Announcing bluffbench: A New Evaluation Benchmark for LLM Plot Interpretation bluffbench is a new evaluation tool designed to assess how well language models accurately describe data visualizations when plotted trends contradict their expectations. In real-world data science, anomalies and unexpected patterns are often the most valuable discoveries. If LLM agents miss these subtle discrepancies that go against intuitive expectations, such as a lack of correlation where one is assumed, it can lead to incorrect conclusions or overlooked data quality issues. bluffbench is specifically for those developing or using AI coding agents and data science tools that rely on LLMs to generate and interpret plots (such as Posit's Databot and Positron Assistant). It addresses the crucial challenge of LLMs exhibiting a tendency to "see what they expect to see" rather than accurately describing counterintuitive or anomalous data relationships presented in a plot.
