Lung cancer remains the deadliest cancer in the U.S. Early stages often cause no symptoms, which means most cases are detected at a stage when treatment is much more difficult. Northwestern Medicine is leading the charge to change that. Current lung cancer screening guidelines exclude many people who are at risk. In a new study, published on JAMA Network, Northwestern Medicine scientists recommend expanding the universal age-based screening to 40-85. They estimate this would detect 94% of lung cancers, preventing more than 26,000 extra deaths annually. Our new Northwestern Medicine Lung Health Center is helping make this vision a reality by offering no cost lung screenings in #Chicago. These comprehensive low-dose CT scans help detect lung conditions early and establish a baseline for lifelong health monitoring—redefining preventive care and advocating for universal age-based screening. To schedule a no-cost* lung screening: 📞 Call 312.695.1800 (TTY: 711) and mention the Northwestern Medicine Lung Health Center 📩 Email lunghealthcenter@nm.org *A risk assessment is conducted by a healthcare provider to determine eligibility.* For more information: 🔗 Lung Health Center Website: https://lnkd.in/gJxRQqsT 🧬 Read the JAMA study: https://lnkd.in/gB8KdHSV #LungCancerAwareness #EarlyDetection #NMBetter

We’re proud of our team at Stone Institute of Psychiatry at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for caring for patients not only within our walls, but also when they leave our doors to continue their journey toward healing. Occupational Therapist Elnaz Alimi and the Occupational Therapy & Recreational Therapy team received a Healthier Communities Grant through Northwestern Medicine to launch a project in the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Psychiatry Emergency Department Program. Through this initiative, people experiencing homelessness receive “Crisis to Wellness Kits” at discharge, thoughtfully prepared with self-care items and additional well-being sources. Thank you to everyone involved in this effort. Your commitment brings comfort and support that extend far beyond a hospital stay.

In honor of its 10th anniversary, Team Karen awarded four $10,000 grants to patients undergoing breast cancer treatment at Northwestern Medicine Cancer Center Warrenville. Team Karen was founded by Kenny Carlquest in memory of his late wife, Karen, who was diagnosed with stage 3 triple negative breast cancer that later became metastatic. Karen’s experience showed just how overwhelming cancer treatment can be — physically, emotionally and financially. Kenny created Team Karen to honor her life and ensure other families receive the care and support they need during such a challenging time. The foundation’s mission is to ease financial stress and create opportunities for families to make meaningful memories together. This year’s recipients include: Jessica Rocha (31) – An artist living with triple negative breast cancer, Jessica plans to use her grant toward medical costs. Mikaela Deleon (25) – A middle school Spanish teacher, she is recently married and pursuing her master’s degree. Mikaela plans to use her grant money to help pay for her graduate program. Tiffany Honeywood (45) – An applied behavior analysis therapist with an 8-year-old child, she hopes to use her grant for medical bills and a spa day. Emily Brock (30) – As a mom to a 5-year-old and 10-month-old, she plans to use part of her grant to help pay for a trip to Disney World with her family. Thank you, Team Karen, for 10 years of generosity, compassion and care for our patients and community.
