About us

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is the largest public housing authority in North America. NYCHA is committed to increasing opportunities for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers by providing safe, affordable housing and facilitating access to social and community services. More than 400,000 New Yorkers reside in NYCHA’s 326 public housing developments around the five boroughs, and another 235,000 receive subsidized rental assistance in private homes through the NYCHA-administered Section 8 Leased Housing Program. To fulfill its vital mission and even better serve residents while facing dramatic reductions in traditional government funding, NYCHA is developing new financing options and building innovative partnerships across the public, private, and non-profit sectors. These strategies are helping NYCHA to address many key challenges, from preserving aging housing stock through timely maintenance and modernization of developments, to increasing resident access to a multitude of community, educational and recreational programs, as well as job readiness and training initiatives.

  • A new chapter of creativity and community is brightening Amsterdam Addition! In partnership with residents, the Public Housing Community Fund, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and Artolution, NYCHA unveiled Village of Generations — a 10,000-square-foot mural designed by residents to honor intergenerational connections, music, and the enduring strength of community. Led by public artist Dr. Max Frieder, the collaborative effort brought together more than 100 residents and partners to transform shared space into a vibrant public artwork that celebrates belonging and beauty across NYCHA communities. “This is a moment in history, this is what the best of humanity looks like, this is what the best in history can look like, which is community, coming together,” said Dr. Max Frieder, Ed.D, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Artolution. “This not only beautifies, but it creates meaning for all of us. We had over 100 participants, 10,000 square feet of paint, and we have never done a ground and wall mural this large in history. It has been an honor and a joy!” Read the full story: https://on.nyc.gov/47JB4oo #NYCHA #PublicArt #NYCHAArts

  • To help teams detect and repair underground leaks more quickly — and with less disruption to residents — NYCHA engineers are using a new diagnostic tool called the Radio Frequency Correlator. By turning pipes into “radio antennas,” this technology allows staff to trace plumbing hidden underground or behind walls with impressive precision, saving time, resources, and unnecessary digging. “You could say that it’s a way to use x‑ray vision, using radio frequency identifiers to find where you’re going,” said Senior Director of Fire Safety Joe Terranova. As Mr. Terranova explains, this new approach helps NYCHA “work smarter, not harder.” Read the full story: https://on.nyc.gov/49dmjg6 #NYCHA #NYCHAEmployees #PublicHousing #Innovation

  • Meet U.S. Navy & NYCHA Veteran Mike Marrero: A Life of Service from Wagner Houses to the South China Sea NYCHA proudly spotlights Mike Marrero — a former Wagner Houses resident, U.S. Navy veteran, and longtime Community Associate in our Office of Special Projects. After serving aboard the USS Bryce Canyon in the 1970s, Mike carried the discipline and teamwork he learned in the Navy into a remarkable 44-year career at NYCHA. Throughout the decades, he has supported residents, strengthened operations, and exemplified what true public service looks like. Asked how his military experience shaped his NYCHA journey, Mr. Marrero didn’t hesitate: “The same rules apply,” he said. “You gotta show up, you gotta do the job, you gotta respect people, and you gotta follow through.” As he prepares for retirement, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mike for his extraordinary dedication and lasting impact across NYCHA communities.
