About us

The New England Aquarium is a catalyst for global change through public engagement, commitment to marine animal conservation, leadership in education, innovative scientific research, and effective advocacy for vital and vibrant oceans. It is the only Boston-based cultural institution with a mission focused primarily on the environment, promoting the importance of protecting the blue planet through innovative exhibits and educational programs. These are some highlights of the Aquarium’s mission in action, on exhibit, and through our education, conservation, and research programs here on Central Wharf and around the globe. -The Trust Family Foundation Shark and Ray Touch Tank and the New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center showcase the diversity and importance of marine animals. -The Giant Ocean Tank inspires visitors with the beauty and complexity of marine habitat through replication of a Caribbean coral reef. -Aquarium educators lead a nationwide initiative on climate change and inspire future ocean protectors with hands-on programs such as Harbor Discoveries Camps and live blue™ Ambassadors. -The Aquarium’s Marine Animal Rescue Team leads regional efforts to rehabilitate and release endangered species of sea turtles at our state-of-the-art Animal Care Center. -Aquarium scientists advise some of the nation’s largest seafood companies on methods to enhance the sustainability of commercial fisheries worldwide. -The Aquarium is home to the world’s longest-running right whale research program, coordinating efforts along the East Coast of the U.S. to restore the population of this endangered species. -The Aquarium collaborates with partners around the world to protect ocean ecosystems, such as coral reefs. In 2008, we partnered with the island nation of Kiribati and Conservation International to create the Phoenix Islands Protected Area. • What is the Aquarium's BalanceBlue Lab? 🌊🔬 The Aquarium’s BalanceBlue Lab (BBL) is going beyond research, drawing on the expertise of the Aquarium’s Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life to implement, and scale solutions that support ocean industry and ocean health. The lab advises and partners with businesses and decision-makers to help ensure that the blue economy—from seafood to shipping—can grow responsibly while safeguarding the ocean and all who rely on it. As Director of the Lab, Michelle Cho brings more than eighteen years of experience researching the health and environmental impacts of commercial global fisheries and partnering with the seafood industry. • Rescuing sea turtles, together. 💚 🐢 As temperatures drop in Cape Cod Bay, we’re preparing for cold-stunned sea turtle season—a critical time for turtles that become stranded after ocean waters cool too quickly. For more than 30 years, our incredible partners at Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary have led rescue efforts along Cape Cod Bay, coordinating teams of staff and volunteers who search for and recover these turtles. After initial triage at Wellfleet Bay, turtles are transported to our Sea Turtle Hospital in Quincy for rehabilitation. We’re standing by to welcome our first patients of the season, and we’re so grateful for this long-running partnership dedicated to protecting sea turtles. 🎥: Mass Audubon and Andrew Mudge / Black Kettle Films #SeaTurtleRescue #ColdStunSeason #MassAudubon #NewEnglandAquarium

  • We are so proud to have hosted the fourth International Seadragon Husbandry Symposium last week! Thank you to our colleagues representing 25 institutions across seven countries that traveled to Boston to discuss and collaborate on advances in seadragon husbandry, research, conservation, welfare, nutrition, reproduction, and more. Seadragons are endemic to the cool waters along Australia’s southern coast, meaning that’s the only place they’re found in the wild. Because of this, learning and networking opportunities like the symposium are so important to further the collective knowledge and wellbeing of this fascinating species.

  • Earlier this month, a delegation from the Aquarium attended the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi! Led by Dr. Letise LaFeir, our chief of conservation and stewardship, the team included Dr. John Mandelman, chief scientist and vice president of the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, Sarah Reiter, associate vice president of conservation practice, and Elizabeth Stephenson, director of the Marine Conservation Action Fund. A few key takeaways from the Congress: • IUCN set conservation priorities through the Abu Dhabi Call to Action, which reinforced nature’s essential role in human and planetary well-being and called for equity, science, education, and climate-aligned investment. • We celebrated the green sea turtle’s IUCN improved status from "Endangered" to "Least Concern"—a milestone for a species that has inspired generations through Myrtle, our longtime Aquarium resident, and through the work of our Sea Turtle Hospital. • We supported motions to protect seamounts, vulnerable ecosystems, and the mesopelagic zone, which supports marine life regularly seen in our region, including deep-diving pilot whales and beaked whales. And as a business that promotes responsible use and sustainability, we also supported motions ranging from ending plastic pollution to nature-positive business practices to mentoring young ecological stewards. • We shared insights from our Marine Conservation Action Fund (MCAF) on equitable and effective funding practices in ocean conservation. • The Congress also provided opportunities for global collaboration. We exchanged ideas with local leaders from SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, the National Aquarium Abu Dhabi, and Jaywun; U.S. colleagues from Seattle Aquarium, Shedd Aquarium, San Diego Zoo, and others; MCAF Fellows and Project Leaders who were featured speakers at several sessions at the Congress; and youth, Indigenous leaders, philanthropists, and businesses from near and far. We are proud to be part of this global community advancing ocean health through science, collaboration, and action!

What an inspiring time at the Blue Future Conference- Plymouth, MA 2025. It was a privilege to represent the New England Aquarium and our work as a trusted, science-based organization shaping the future of the blue economy, and to introduce Bill Nye, whose lifelong commitment to science communication reminds us how powerful knowledge can be when shared with purpose. Our team’s presence across panels on marine tech, policy, and climate resilience reflected our belief that protecting the ocean and growing the economy go hand in hand. When science, innovation, and partnership meet, we can build a future where the ocean, and all who rely on it, thrive together.
