About us

Math, Engineering, and Science Academy (MESA) Charter High School is a community high school in Bushwick, Brooklyn. We opened our doors in August 2013 and we now have 498 students in grades 9-12. We graduated our first class of seniors in June 2017 and our cumulative graduation rate is 94%. Our students come from more than forty different middle schools, including traditional public, parochial, and public charter schools. Some are advanced students coming from magnet schools; others are beginning English Language Learners. What they all have in common is a desire to succeed; MESA students come to school every day, ready to work. As an organization, MESA is entering a new phase. Based on its success, MESA is proud to be entrusted with opening a second school in District 20. Serving the diverse families of Borough Park, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Sunset Park, and Dyker Heights, MESA: South Brooklyn will be the first public 9-12 school built in the area in over 80 years.

We never thought MESA Charter High School would be an athletic powerhouse, but Coach Jose Green has won eight flag football titles during his tenure here. Far more importantly, he's been an invaluable teacher, counselor, and mentor to our students. I can count dozens of young people who have graduated from MESA because of him. Please take two minutes and vote for him.

  • Each month, our students take part in Lunch & Learn sessions to explore different career paths and hear directly from professionals making an impact in their fields. For October, our focus was on Healthcare, and we were lucky to welcome an incredible group of guests: Dr. Matt Gotlin, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon at NY Orthopedics; Kayla Bigelow, Senior Clinical Site Leader at Abbott; Damian Romero, Paramedic with the City of New York Fire Department; Charlest Loving, Medical Assistant at NY Orthopedics; Alexis Brown, Physician Assistant at NY Orthopedics. We’re so grateful to each of them for taking time out of their busy schedules to share their stories, answer our students’ questions, and inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.

  • A first of the first! We are so excited to make this happen! Last week, our Bushwick Seniors visited South Brooklyn to host a “Lunch & Learn” with the Freshman class. They came prepared with thoughtful questions, shared their experiences as MESA students, and offered advice they wish they’d known earlier. The afternoon wrapped up with one-on-one conversations, where seniors gave personalized guidance and encouragement. Moments like these showcase the heart of MESA: Students supporting students, building community, and leading with purpose.

  • Our students had an amazing time at the Museum of Math during an educator-led session on probability-- complete with a competitive dice game! Afterwards, they explored the exhibits and brought math to life in a whole new way. Math-focused field trips are rare, so this was an especially exciting opportunity. We had students from all four grades participate, and they opted in enthusiastically! Huge thanks to our Math Department Lead at our Bushwick Campus, Ms. Jocelyn Pena, who coordinated everything on the ground and made the day a success!

  • We’re excited to share that our very first Back to School Night at MESA: South Brooklyn was a tremendous success! Our founding families came together to meet the dedicated teachers and staff, and to get a comprehensive overview of the courses and goals for the year ahead. Everyone showed so much excitement and support — it really set a positive tone for what’s going to be an incredible year of growth and learning.

  • We’re proud to share a newly released case study of Alumni Lab, written by David Fischer. The piece highlights how our program is helping young adults in NYC turn post-high school uncertainty into real career opportunity and underscores the importance of Alumni Lab’s work being recognized beyond our own community. This recognition is a big win for our team and Fellows and we’re excited to share Alumni Lab’s story more widely. Read the full case study here: https://lnkd.in/ewpif9Tu
