  • Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer death, but it doesn’t have to be. In this video, Gary Hochheiser, MD, Director of Thoracic Surgery at MaineHealth, breaks down why early screening is essential, especially for those at high risk. Learn how low-dose CT scans can detect lung cancer before symptoms appear, and why the process is simpler and more accessible than you might think. • Thanks to the collective efforts across the system, all 12 MaineHealth facilities earned the 2025 Partner for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth, recognizing significant and measurable progress in environmental performance over the last two years. The data reveal several encouraging trends. Energy efficiency projects—such as equipment upgrades and building system improvements—have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 2,771 metric tons, that’s equal to eliminating 7 million miles driven by a gasoline-powered car. Sustainability reporting identified an opportunity to reduce anesthetic gas emissions. Over the past two years, a collaboration between Facilities, Sustainability, and Perioperative Services has reduced anesthetic gas emissions by 1,100 tons through targeted process and infrastructure improvements. Solid waste trends show both progress and opportunity. MaineHealth’s composting efforts were strong in 2024, with more than 173 tons of food waste diverted from landfills—helping to reduce methane emissions. On average, 30% of hospital waste is recyclable, and MaineHealth currently recycles about 23% of total waste, indicating room for continued improvement. Additionally, data show a growing opportunity to expand plant-based menu options in cafeterias to improve both community and environmental health outcomes. • At MaineHealth Primary Care Family Medicine Norway, Clinical Supervisor Brianna Walker seated a longtime patient with diabetes in front of a sophisticated new retinal camera. She took images of his eyes that the camera’s AI technology scanned for diabetic retinopathy, a serious condition that can threaten vision. The camera quickly identified early signs of the condition, allowing for timely follow-up and care. “My patient looked at me and said, ‘you might’ve just saved my sight,’” Brianna recalls. “That moment reminded me how powerful this tool really is.” Read the full story at https://lnkd.in/eKgJNNZV

  • Breast Cancer Awareness Month may have ended, but awareness should never fade. At the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center at MaineHealth Franklin Hospital, early detection is more than a message—it’s a mission. For mammographer Stephanie MacDonald, it’s also personal. While working at the center, Stephanie’s own breast cancer was detected early—saving her life. Today, she uses that experience to guide and comfort others through their screenings. Watch Stephanie’s story and be reminded why we should always stay aware, schedule regular mammograms, and support those facing breast cancer every day of the year.

  • Members of the MaineHealth Cancer Care team visited the State House in Augusta this week to meet with Governor Janet Mills for the signing of her Pink & Pearl Proclamation.
