  • Employee Spotlight: Adam McWilliams From a Spark of Curiosity to a Career of Purpose Sometimes the smallest moments shape the biggest chapters of our lives. For Adam, that moment came at 16 years old, when his family’s computer needed an upgrade. As a family friend worked on the machine, Adam watched intently, mesmerized by how data could travel through a simple wire. It was the AOL dial-up era, and for Adam, this glimpse into technology felt like discovering magic. “I couldn’t believe information could move from one computer to another so far away. I had to know how it worked,” he remembers. That curiosity turned into mentorship, which sparked a passion, eventually leading Adam to study at Pittsburgh Technical Institute, and ultimately to Lifesteps, where he’s been an essential part of the IT team for 20 years. Adam has spent two decades not only solving technical challenges but also making a meaningful impact behind the scenes. “What I love most is the wide range of technology I get to work with and knowing that what I do helps others,” he shares. “But more than that, it’s the people. The camaraderie with my coworkers, the sense of purpose, and being part of something that matters.” Adam’s journey is especially personal. “I’ve faced my own lifelong challenges, including ADHD, so Lifesteps mission resonates deeply with me. Even though I’m not working directly with individuals in our programs, I like to believe that my work still contributes to their success and well-being.” Outside of work, Adam values quality time with his wife, Tricia, and their dog, Dexter. He enjoys playing video games, tossing bags in a friendly cornhole match, competing in shuffleboard, watching NASCAR, target shooting, and spending meaningful time with friends and family. No matter the activity, Adam brings the same curiosity, focus, and enthusiasm that first sparked his passion for technology and continues to drive his purpose today. Adam’s story is a powerful reminder that a moment of curiosity can grow into a life of purpose. Through his dedication, technical skills, and heart for helping others, he continues to make a difference, one connection at a time.

  • Employee Spotlight: Jon Knoll - Finding Purpose in an Unexpected Place Twelve years ago, Jon stepped into a Direct Care role at Lifesteps, not fully knowing what to expect. Fresh out of college and uncertain about his next steps, he gave it a try, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of his life. “I didn’t have much to choose from at the time,” Jon recalls. “I tried out Direct Care and ended up falling in love with it.” His natural connection with the individuals he supported and his growing passion for the work quickly became clear. Later, Jon transitioned to the Purchasing Department, where he felt his skills could make an even bigger impact behind the scenes. But he never fully stepped away from Direct Care; he continues to lend a hand when needed, staying connected to the work that first inspired him. What keeps Jon going after more than a decade? “The people,” he says without hesitation. “My coworkers, especially the ones you can clearly see, have a real passion for what they do. That kind of energy is contagious.” Outside of work, Jon enjoys a healthy mix of competition and quality time. He can often be found bowling, playing cornhole, or cheering on his favorite sports, NASCAR, football, baseball, and wrestling. But nothing matters more than time with his wife and son, his favorite teammates in life. Jon’s journey is proof that sometimes the path you stumble upon becomes the one that fits best. At Lifesteps, he found more than just a job; he found purpose, community, and a place to thrive.

  • A Heart for Community: Meet our 27-Year Lifesteps Leader, Maria LaBarbera-Martin Some career paths begin with a passion. Others start with a person who leaves a lasting impact. For Maria, the journey toward a lifelong career supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities began in childhood. One of her closest friends had a sister with Down syndrome, an early experience that offered both insight and empathy into the unique joys and challenges of caregiving. “That experience opened my eyes,” she shares. “It gave me the opportunity to not only be introduced to someone with an intellectual disability but to understand the daily realities of care. It truly shaped the direction of my future.” Motivated by that early connection, she accepted an internship with a residential provider that supported individuals with disabilities, and from that moment on, she never looked back. Now, 27 years into her career at Lifesteps, she serves as Senior Director of Community Homes, helping individuals live as independently as possible while being part of vibrant communities. “It’s incredibly rewarding to assist individuals and their families in reaching their goals of greater independence,” she says. “But what inspires me most is leading teams of skilled, hardworking, caring, and dedicated staff who carry out Lifesteps mission every single day.” Lifesteps mission, Helping Individuals and Families with Life’s Changing Needs, is more than a slogan. It’s the heart of her work, and the reason she’s spent nearly three decades growing, leading, and serving within the organization. Outside of the office, she finds joy in family life, spending time with her husband, their two sons, Cooper and Carter, and their four cats. It doesn’t surprise us that Maria has a sweet, creative side: she loves baking, making candy, and decorating cakes for her loved ones' special celebrations. Her story is one of compassion, leadership, and long-standing dedication. For 27 years, she has been a steady presence in the lives of those she serves and a true example of the difference one person can make when they follow a path guided by empathy. Thank you, Maria, for your leadership, heart, and unwavering commitment to the individuals and families we support.
