At KIPP DC, students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to become Washington, DC’s next generation of leaders

About us

At KIPP DC schools, students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to become Washington DC’s next generation of leaders. Equipped with a KIPP DC education, our alumni are empowered to be successful in college, careers, and life. KIPP DC schools educate and support students in the District of Columbia who have historically had limited access to quality educational options. We are grounded in a commitment to excellence, equity, and justice. In partnership with families, we approach our work with a set of core beliefs: We believe all students have the right to rigorous, relevant, and joyful learning experiences led by exceptionally talented educators who promote student achievement and a sense of belonging. We believe students and alumni best succeed when surrounded by a community of champions and advocates. We believe communities thrive when our public school systems are diverse, ambitious, purposeful, and unwavering in their focus on what is best for students. KIPP DC educates 6,800 students at 18 schools on seven campuses in the District of Columbia.

  • Thank you to The Washington Post for telling the story of Susan Schaeffler’s 25 year dedication to KIPP DC. From our earliest days in a church basement to becoming a network that today educates 7,500 students from almost every ward in DC, Susan’s leadership has been at the heart of it all. We are deeply grateful for her service, her love for our community, and the foundation she’s built for the future. We’re excited for the next chapter as she passes the torch to our current President, Shannon Hodge, who will continue this legacy with care and vision.

Founder & CEO | Transforming DC youth outcomes through education, sports, & strategic partnerships | 24K students inspired over two decades

Today I shared with the KIPP DC community that I will transition out of the CEO role in February 2026 and into a Special Advisor role. After nearly 25 years, it is an honor to reflect on the work we have done together — growing from one school in a church basement to a network serving 7,500 students across Washington, D.C. I am proud of what we’ve built: joyful, rigorous schools; a strong and enduring community; and a belief in our students that guides everything we do. I am equally proud that our Board has named Shannon Hodge, our current President, as the next CEO of KIPP DC. Shannon is an exceptional leader, and I have full confidence in her ability to guide KIPP DC’s next era. Thank you to every educator, family member, student, alumni, and partner who has been part of this journey. I am grateful for your trust and excited for what comes next. https://lnkd.in/eqGjdjSh

  • As we celebrate our 25 year anniversary, we also share another important milestone for our organization. Beginning in February of next year, our founder and CEO, Susan Schaeffler, will transition to a new special advisor role. Our current president, Shannon Hodge, will assume the role of CEO and lead KIPP DC on its journey for the next 25 years of impact in DC. We are so grateful to Susan for her incredible vision and leadership over the last 25 years. Under her leadership, KIPP DC established a national reputation for academic excellence, strong community partnerships, and a commitment to preparing students for success in college and careers. With such a strong foundation, Shannon is excited to lead our next chapter—continuing to create joyful, affirming schools where students learn with purpose and grow into the people who will shape the future of our city. Please join us in thanking Susan and wishing Shannon well in her new role! Visit kippdc.org to hear from Susan and learn more.
