We are thankful for our nation’s veterans every day. In honor of Veteran’s Day, we want to share the story of one of HearingLife’s veterans, Sara Rooks, who works as a patient care coordinator in Holland, Michigan. Sara joined the National Guard when she was in high school, following in her father’s footsteps. At first, joining was a way to help pay for college, but service to others ultimately became much more meaningful for Sara. “My military career was more about the drive of service before self, and excellence in all we do,” says Sara. “It gave me purpose, and I wanted to keep bettering myself to be an inspiration to others.” Sara retired from service after 20 years serving as a Field Medic and then an Equal Opportunity Specialist with the Ohio Air National Guard 180th Fighter Wing. The leadership skills she learned have served her well throughout her life. “Everything I did was a contribution to being mission-ready,” Sara says. “I bring that to work every day still, the drive and passion to help others.” It is always particularly meaningful to Sara to connect with other veterans and their families when they come to HearingLife for their hearing care. Seeing their photos and connecting over the shared experience of military travel and multi-generational service is always a highlight for her. “It’s important to recognize the sacrifice others make for our service,” says Sara. “I deployed many times, and I always had the help and support of my family – it truly takes a village.”
