Congratulations to North Island College on the completion of tul'al'txw, “a house of learning,” the college’s new housing project. This project brings affordable student housing to the Comox Valley for the first time, with a deep focus on sustainability and the college’s commitment to deepening awareness and understanding of the traditional territories where the campus is located. The opening celebration included two events, one led by K’ómoks First Nation and the K’ómoks Connection Committee and included blessings, namings, and reflections on the project's significance to the community. The other event was rooted in community with the Honorable Jessie Sunner, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills, emphasizing the significance of this project to the Comox Valley and British Columbia more broadly. The completion of this project is the result of a collaborative effort involving North Island College’s leadership, Indigenous leaders, government partners, designers, and the many trades and suppliers who brought tul’al’txw to life. For the Nevada Department of Transportation, we assembled a team of biologists, ecologists, planners and engineers to identify hotspots for wildlife-highway conflicts across the state. The team incorporated highway safety, wildlife connectivity, feasibility and future conditions into a model that will serve as an important transportation planning tool.
