Our Eat. Learn. Play. Bus pulled up to the Oakland Día de los Muertos Festival for the very first time, and the energy was amazing! This beloved celebration in the Fruitvale neighborhood is organized by our friends at The Unity Council and has been bringing the community together for 30 years. With our partners at Alameda County Community Food Bank, Community Kitchens Oakland, and the Oakland Literacy Coalition, we shared culturally affirming books, healthy snacks, and fresh produce with kids and families taking in the festival's music, art, and altar installations. Recognized by the Library of Congress as a “Local Legacy,” this festival is Oakland at its best. Every child deserves the chance to become a strong reader. In our documentary short, “From Struggle To Strength: Advancing Literacy in Oakland,” OUSD teachers share how one-on-one and small-group tutoring can transform learning—but these tier 2 and 3 tutoring interventions have historically been too costly to reach every child. With support from Eat. Learn. Play. and Oakland Unified School District, more Oakland students can now access personalized tutoring, giving them the instruction and attention they need to thrive. Together with our partners at Alameda County Community Food Bank and East Bay Community Foundation, Eat. Learn. Play. supported daily meal distributions across 20+ sites in Oakland—ensuring that kids and families could count on healthy meals during the months when school is out. When kids gain reading confidence, everything else becomes possible. In this clip from from our documentary short, "From Struggle To Strength: Advancing Literacy in Oakland," Stephen and Ayesha read to students and share why we are committed to raising literacy rates in partnership with Oakland Unified School District. After a year at pilot schools, our one-on-one tutoring is now expanding to all 50 OUSD elementary schools in Oakland. More than 120 tutors provide tailored instruction, ongoing coaching, and progress monitoring to help every child build strong reading skills and confidence. Thanks to our incredible partners at Ripple, Oakland kids are learning and playing in brighter spaces every day. Ripple and its employees have donated 2 million dollars and volunteered at multiple schoolyard builds—most recently helping transform Joaquin Miller Elementary (our 20th build) into a more joyful and active place to play. Their generosity also fuels our literacy work, helping us bridge the reading gap for Oakland students and ensure every child has access to books and support to thrive.
