Our November art calendar feature is Jammie Holmes’s “Peace of Mind 10” (2021). Born and raised in rural Louisiana, Holmes is a contemporary painter known for colorful and symbolic scenes of Black life in the Deep South. Holmes spent over a decade working in the oil fields before relocating to Dallas in 2016 to become an artist. The quick brushstrokes and intentionally unfinished objects in his paintings emphasize his own sense of memory as well as universal experiences of struggle and fortitude: “I was inspired by what my everyday life was like when I was a young man in Thibodaux. I wanted to show that this same way of life is still taking place today—people worrying about their future, their lost loved ones and what’s next for them.” Holmes’s artwork is in the permanent collections of the Dallas Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University; and Hammer Museum. His artwork has also been exhibited at Various Small Fires, Los Angeles; Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York; and Deitch Projects, Los Angeles. Reaching further—for the moon! We were proud to help sponsor Self-Help for the Elderly’s wellness and fundraising campaign, "Walk Run Ride to the Moon," which raised $180,000 total to support essential services for seniors across the Bay Area. The month-long wellness initiative collectively tracked participants’ mileage through walking, running and riding. The goal? To tally up the total distance to the moon—approximately 238,900 miles. Our NorCal associates, along with their friends and families, laced up their shoes and joined hundreds of community members in San Francisco’s Chinatown on an early Saturday morning to add to the effort. #EWBcommunities #EastWestBank #SelfHelpfortheElderly #WalkRunRide2Moon
