The Department of Defense has introduced CMMC (Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification), a unified, mandatory standard designed to strengthen cybersecurity across its 300,000-strong Defense Industrial Base, responding directly to high-profile breaches such as the F-35 subcontractor incident, which exposed 30 GB of sensitive data. The updated CMMC 2.0 streamlines compliance into three clear maturity levels aligned closely with NIST and other established frameworks, simplifying the certification process. Additionally, the shift from contractor self-attestation to independent third-party assessments provides stronger assurance that cybersecurity defenses match today's threat environment. For smaller firms, shared services through cloud or managed providers can significantly reduce certification time and costs, potentially shrinking compliance timelines from months to weeks.
