COP30 was a palpable reminder of our shared responsibility for the future 🌍 Discussions at the Standards Pavilion centred on how to turn commitments into real action. As COP30 ends, we’re reflecting on the conversations that took place and the role the CMSI plays in the wider landscape of the energy transition. Key takeaways include: - Circularity alone cannot meet the demand for energy transition minerals – new mines will be needed, and this must be done responsibly. - Climate and nature are inseparable, and standards must reflect this by valuing nature in the same way we value decarbonisation - unlocking cost-effective solutions for water and tailings stability and accelerating their adoption. - A consistent global standard that simplifies the complexity of the current regulations landscape will support responsible mining, helping to streamline reporting requirements, improve understanding, drive investor pressure for responsible mining, and inform regulation. It will create a baseline for performance, support continuous improvement, and prompt action at the site level. - The CMSI is a good example of how the private sector can step up to act when governments fail to provide social and economic contributions.
Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative
Mining
Driving improved performance on responsible mining at scale.
About us
The Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative is a collaboration between The Copper Mark, ICMM, Mining Association of Canada (MAC) and World Gold Council (WGC) to consolidate their four different voluntary responsible mining standards into one global Standard and multi-stakeholder oversight system. Our vision is for a sustainable society, enabled by the responsible production, sourcing, and recycling of metals and minerals. Through this Initiative, we are aiming to simplify the current upstream mining standards landscape and promote continual improvement of environmental, social and governance practices along individual metals’ value chains.
