  • Today, we join communities across Alaska in celebrating 🎉Indigenous Peoples’ Day, held each year on the second Monday of October. Alaska was the second state—after North Dakota—to officially recognize this important day in 2015. This day honors and celebrates the rich history, traditions, and ongoing contributions of Alaska’s Indigenous peoples — including the Sugpiaq people, whose ancestral lands include the place we now call Valdez. Here in Valdez, we celebrate this connection through Nayurluku Park (Neigh-og-lou-goo), the Sugcestun name meaning “to guard” or “keep safe.” Chosen with consultation by Sugpiaq members, the name reflects a shared respect for the land and those who have protected it for generations. 💙🩵 📍Visit Nayurluku Park: https://lnkd.in/g-Pq5HiW #IndigenousPeoplesDay #NayurlukuPark #ValdezAK #SugpiaqHeritage

  • Update from the City Manager's Desk🗣️ Earlier today, City Manager Nathan Duval shared an update on how the current Federal Government shutdown may affect Essential Air Service flights and our community at large. His comment is below.⬇️ "The City received the notice of the lapse in funding for the Essential Air Service Program this morning and immediately contacted Reeve Air, our contracted carrier. Presently, and for the near term, Reeve does not anticipate any disruption in service for our essential air service route. We are in communication with officials in Washington, D.C., but there are still a number of unknowns at this time.  Fortunately, we have a solid carrier who intends to do their best for our community; we also have access to the road system. If the situation were to worsen, we at least have a backup option that many communities in Alaska, which receive this subsidy, do not have.  We continue to monitor the shutdown for all other impacts, especially as they relate to our community members employed by the federal government. On Tuesday, the City Council will vote on a resolution affording some relief to those directly impacted by the shutdown or furloughs to ensure they don’t incur any late fees or penalties related to City billing items." #ValdezAlaska #EssentialAirService #GovernmentShutdown Martha Barberio REEVE AIR ALASKA, LLC
