Health care for everyone.
About us
Created by voters in 2004, Central Health’s mission is to improve the health of the community by caring for those who need it most. We are empowering communities with care by building a better healthcare system. Central Health is the public hospital district serving the residents of Travis County. Central Health’s core objective is to be healthcare system providing high-quality, equitable care for low-income Travis County residents. The hospital district is also indebted to the taxpayers of Travis County—who fund the majority of Central Health’s budget—to operate in a fiscally responsible and transparent manner. Central Health is a separate political subdivision of the State of Texas created in 2004 by a vote of Travis County residents. The boundaries of its health care service area and taxing jurisdiction are contiguous with Travis County. In early 2022, Central Health adopted a Healthcare Equity Plan which will guide the immediate and long-term work of the hospital district to improve health and reduce inequities for Travis County’s low-income population. The plan identifies four strategic imperatives: Access & Capacity, Care Coordination, Member Engagement, and System of Care.

“Providing care for patients is a privilege—but advocating for them is a responsibility.” Meet Dr. Priyanka Jagannathan, Chief Resident at Dell Seton Medical Center and a graduate of Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. During her three years training inside Central Health’s Southeast Health & Wellness Center with CommUnityCare Health Centers, Dr. Jagannathan gained firsthand experience serving Travis County residents, learning humility, gratitude, and the importance of understanding each patient’s story. Now, as an attending physician, she’s shaping the next generation of doctors while helping create a stronger, more equitable future for health care in Central Texas. What started as a fight for her own health became a calling to uplift others. Now in remission, Laura Cruz brings compassion and calm to everyone who visits Central Health — a living testament to resilience, hope, and community. This month, she joined thousands at the Susan G. Komen More Than Pink Walk in Austin to celebrate strength, survivorship, and connection. “I greet everybody with a smile every day, no matter how my day is,” she says, a reflection of the strength that carried her through breast cancer and into a new chapter helping others feel seen and supported. Access to healthy food is essential to good health, but for many residents in eastern Travis County, it’s out of reach. Through its partnership with Farmshare Austin, Central Health is addressing this challenge head-on. The Fresh for Less Mobile Market program, first piloted at our Southeast Health & Wellness Center, now operates at four sites across the Central Health system, bringing locally grown, affordable food directly to communities in need. It’s part of our broader effort to build a connected system of care that treats food as medicine, improving health outcomes one meal at a time.
