There is no "perfect" intumescent #FireProofing product. But there is an "ideal" one for every project. The real question is not "Which material is best?" It's "Which one is engineered for this design, this schedule, and these conditions?" Fire ratings are only the starting point. Application methods, finish expectations, sustainability targets, jobsite conditions, and construction sequencing all shape the right choice. The strongest fireproofing specs come from early collaboration and informed material selection. When performance, schedule, and design needs are aligned, the system meets immediate requirements while supporting long-term reliability. There may not be a universal solution, but the optimal intumescent exists for every project's circumstances. Choose it confidently with the help of good guidance from technical experts. Delivering a lasting #FireProtection coating system that supports ambitious sustainability goals is no easy task. For Google’s Bayview 1, Bayview 2, and Charleston East headquarters buildings in San Francisco, every coating had to meet strict LEED v4 emission standards essential to the technology company's mission to create the world's most sustainable buildings. The design of these nearly identical buildings relies heavily on exposed structural steel members as defining architectural elements. To meet both aesthetic and performance requirements, project leaders specified three historically field-proven, long-lasting intumescent coatings: - Thermo-Lag E100, a thin-film epoxy, was applied to exterior structural columns to provide required fire protection while standing up to the elements. - Solvent-based Thermo-Sorb VOC protected the interior columns and roof supports, combining durability with a decorative finish. - A/D Firefilm III, a water-based intumescent, was applied to interior exposed floor joists for impeccable appeal in highly visible locations. Together, these products provided Google with long-term protection, design versatility, and sustainable performance, delivering environmental credibility and architectural prestige in one package.

The Salesforce Transit Center in San Francisco, California, redefines modern infrastructure. Built to replace the historic 1939 Transbay Terminal, the new structure stretches five city blocks, connects every regional bus service, and is capped by a 5-acre rooftop park. But with such ambitious architectural innovation came a unique challenge. The design consisted of vertical and horizontal glass over structural steel, including a glass floor. No prior laboratory testing had verified how passive #FireProofing would perform on structural steel supporting loaded glass. Early collaboration between Carboline and project architects led to the specification of Thermo-Lag® E100, a thin-film epoxy intumescent coating with a long track record of success across commercial, institutional, and light industrial applications. Working closely with UL Research Institutes, Carboline helped establish new testing methods that resulted in UL Design C903, verifying the system met the Transit Center's two-hour fire rating. The final challenge was achieving the architect's desired aesthetic. Properties of Thermo-Lag E100 allowed applicators to achieve a Level 4 architectural finish on large central columns and other interior exposed steel. By pairing a novel design with trusted technology, safety and beauty coexist in one of California's most ambitious civic projects.

Sometimes structural steel must stay visible to meet architects' design objectives. Extraneous factors like weather limitations, strict fire resistance requirements, and the need to meet LEED VOC and emissions standards can make #fireprotection a complex challenge without compromising the architectural vision. At NVIDIA’s Voyager and Endeavor headquarters, both interior and exterior exposed steel required protection. Thermo-Sorb VOC delivered durable, reliable performance that met the design intent, even when cool winter weather tested the originally specified water-borne intumescent, which couldn’t handle open-frame construction. Proven in the field for over a decade, this thin-film, solvent-based intumescent provides the required fire protection and preserves the desired aesthetic, all while saving schedule time and reducing containment costs thanks to its weather resistance. The result? NVIDIA’s architectural vision stayed intact, with design, protection, and long-term performance working seamlessly together.
