Improving #sepsis care remains a critical focus for hospitals and #health systems striving to reduce #mortality rates and enhance patient outcomes. Two leading institutions, Sentara Health and Cleveland Clinic, are driving innovation in this space with impressive results. At Sentara Health, a targeted effort to improve sepsis management has resulted in a 44% reduction in sepsis mortality from 2021 to 2025. A key driver of this success is the sepsis order set integrated into their electronic medical record (EMR). As Doug Browder, emergency department #medical director at Sentara Leigh Hospital, explains, "Our goal for the sepsis order set was to give our clinicians and #nurses a better pathway to care for sepsis patients and ensure that care teams could effectively enter all the elements of the CMS sepsis management bundle. It was crucial to make the sepsis order set in the EMR work for the clinicians and the nursing staff." Cleveland Clinic expanding Bayesian Health’s sepsis work to every site and every patient in their 21+ hospital system is a milestone moment for me both personally and professionally. I have shared the story about the loss of my nephew to sepsis many times. I knew this tragedy that impacted my family was similar to the losses other families experience every year. And as a scientist, I knew it was entirely preventable. That’s why I started Bayesian Health - because I knew that AI and modern data science techniques could have shown the doctors treating my nephew that there was something wrong long before it was suspected. But there was a lot to figure out to take what I knew was possible and make it a reality - how do we gather the right type of information at patients at the right time, how do we meaningfully engage clinicians in ways that trust our signals and act on it, how do put guardrails around our solutions to make sure they are safe. Our Nature Medicine papers did just this - we showed high sensitivity (85%) with a lead time of 5.7 hours in the sickest of cases, strong adoption by providers (89%), and 18% relative reduction in mortality with positive impacts on hospital length of stay and ICU utilization. But in healthcare adoption constantly demands more proof - results in more systems, more populations, more environments. That’s where the team at Cleveland Clinic came in. They trusted that we could deliver our results on their patients. I want to thank Tomislav Mihaljevic, M.D., Raed Dweik, Rohit Chandra, James Morrison, Amy Merlino, and countless others for learning with us and counting on us to help change their patients' lives.
