BART welcomes Microsoft Ignite attendees to San Francisco. Make sure to use BART's new feature: Tap and Ride! BART is the Bay Area’s first Tap and Ride system. Tap and Ride gives riders the ability to pay adult fares at BART fare gates using physical contactless credit or debit cards or mobile payment methods, such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. With Tap and Ride, riders no longer need to use a Clipper card to ride BART. This is an immense timesaver for riders because zero registration or setup process is required, and riders will no longer need to add fare. Just tap and ride. #MSIgnite

👀 Have you noticed that San Francisco’s Market Street stations have a new look? 🌉 These canopies are being constructed along San Francisco’s Market Street are protecting station escalators and helping to beautify the busy downtown corridor with four site-specific artworks that reflect the neighborhoods around them. The canopies are being constructed as part of the San Francisco Station Canopy Project, happening in tandem with BART’s San Francisco Station Escalator Replacement project, which is installing and replacing escalators at Embarcadero, Montgomery St., Powell St., and Civic Center stations. Four artists were selected to create the art after a national call: Norie Sato (Embarcadero Station), Rosana Castrillo Díaz (Montgomery St. Station), Aaron De La Cruz (Powell St. Station), and Ron M. Saunders (Civic Center Station). The new canopies aren’t just coverings for the escalators. Each structure is equipped with LED lighting, multiple security cameras, digital screens that display real-time transit information, and motorized gates that allow the entrances to be locked at street level when stations are closed. In addition to protecting the new escalators from wear and tear, the canopies provide an extra layer of station security and cleanliness, all while brightening Market Street with placemaking artwork that subtly reveals itself as you travel between station and street. Incorporating art was an important piece of the canopy project, as was ensuring the imagery resonated with the people who live along the corridor. “It was crucial to not view Market Street as a monolith during this process,” said BART Art Program Manager Jennifer Easton. “The street has different communities and parts to it, and that was a key aspect to convey with this project.” Read more https://lnkd.in/dunanXZ6 Image credits: BART - Daniel Beck / Andrew Rugge - Perkins Eastman

🧑🤝🧑🚇 📈 BART ridership continued its steady recovery in October, posting the highest weekday average since the pandemic began. Ridership was 10.7% higher than October 2024, with an average of nearly 200,000 weekday riders. In total, passengers took more than 5.3 million trips during the month. On Saturday, October 18, BART recorded 150,000 trips—the highest Saturday ridership since the pandemic. Usage of the new Tap and Ride payment system continues to grow. Nearly 10% of all trips in October used Tap and Ride, which allows riders to pay directly at the fare gates with a contactless bank card. Tap and Ride is now the second most-used payment method after Clipper Adult, with usage up 23% from September. Special fare programs are also expanding. Clipper START, which offers a 50% fare discount to qualifying low-income riders, saw a 40% increase in usage over last October. Meanwhile, usage of Clipper BayPass, the all-in-one Bay Area transit pass, rose 13.4% in October alone and 138% compared to a year ago. BART has been investing in system improvements based on rider feedback, prioritizing safety, cleanliness, and customer experience enhancements. Earlier this year, BART completed installation of stronger, more secure fare gates at all 50 stations and became the first Tap and Ride agency—a system that will soon expand to other local transit agencies through the Next Generation Clipper program. These enhancements are making a visible impact. Riders are noting cleaner trains and stations and an increased safety presence throughout the system. Despite encouraging ridership gains, BART continues to face a $375 million budget deficit. To close that gap solely with fare revenue, current ridership would need to more than double. BART’s most recent budget forecast projects a 4% ridership increase in 2026. BART’s gradual recovery is closely tied to work-from-home trends in the region. While more riders are returning to the system, they are generally taking fewer trips due to remote and hybrid work schedules. Additional ridership information is publicly available and posted monthly at this location: https://lnkd.in/ggnMFvFw

Are you ready for the next Big One? BART has a robust Earthquake Emergency Response Plan and participated in the Great ShakeOut drill. The drill tests our emergency response systems and helps raise public awareness of the importance of having a plan and being prepared. In this video, we follow BART Principal Structural Engineer, Alvin, and members of the Earthquake Response Team (ERT) in action as they inspect Bay Fair Station. ERT members travel to all 50 stations to conduct structural assessments, simulating damage inspections that would occur during a real earthquake. They inspect walkways, support structures, elevators, escalators – anything that could sustain damage in a powerful earthquake. The Great ShakeOut simulation is designed to exercise “muscle memory” for BART’s earthquake response as well as identifying areas for improvement. 🔵If an earthquake strikes, remain calm and listen for instructions from BART personnel. If you’re on a train during an earthquake, sit down or grab a handhold to avoid injury. If you’re in a station during an earthquake, back away from the edge of the trackway.
