In September, we welcomed our first neurosurgery observer funded by the Franke #GlobalNeuroscience Education Center. This is one of two #clinicalobservership positions funded by the Franke family at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute this year. Dr. Sengua Koipapi is visiting Barrow for a total of three months from the United Republic of Tanzania in East Africa, where he has been training in neurosurgery at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute. He expects to complete his training program in 2026 and begin his career as an attending neurosurgeon at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre, a partnering site of #BarrowGlobal and the institution where Dr. Koipapi completed his internship and general surgery residency. Dr. Koipapi first learned about the observership opportunity at Barrow while exploring programs online. He said his experience at Barrow has fundamentally redefined his understanding of neurosurgical excellence—thanks to the Institute's world-renowned clinicians and scientists, rigorous training, and cutting-edge research. "To me, this experience is not a distant dream, but a blueprint," Dr. Koipapi said. "It proves what is achievable through dedication, teamwork, and commitment to excellence. I carry this blueprint with me as I prepare to return to Tanzania. Barrow is our North Star, and we are already taking our first steps in microneurosurgery, interdisciplinary collaboration, dedicated training, and a research-driven spirit. This journey is our proof that with a shared commitment, we can build an exciting future for #neurosurgery at home." An increasing amount of evidence, including research performed here at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute, suggests that environmental exposures play a role in the development of #Parkinsonsdisease. But as Barrow Chair of #Neurology Brad Racette, MD, told The Wall Street Journal, reducing our risk is not as simple as eliminating a single pollutant. For #neurosurgeons, heading into the operation room with a strategy isn't just about knowing what to do—it's also about knowing what not to do. In the latest episode of #BarrowNeurosurgeryBaseCamp, "On Strategic Thinking," attending neurosurgeons and #neurosurgery trainees discuss the importance of skills like visualization, adaptability, and creativity. In addition to #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute neurosurgeons Michael T. Lawton, MD, and Francisco Ponce, MD, you’ll also hear from two guest neurosurgeons in this episode: • Theodore H. Schwartz, MD, Professor of Neurosurgery, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City • Adam S. Arthur, MD, Neurosurgeon, Semmes Murphey Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee Watch the full episode at BarrowNeuro.org/BaseCamp.
