We’ve all watched a kid try to negotiate. No data. No logic. Just pure persistence. “But I want it.” “Why not?” “Everyone else gets to.” It’s relentless. And if you’ve ever been on the receiving end, you know what happens next. Someone snaps, someone caves, and no one really wins. The same thing happens in business conversations. When pressure rises, we tend to defend, explain, or push harder—exactly what doesn’t work. That’s where one of our favorite tools comes in: Pause + Probe. When tension shows up: Pause for two seconds before responding. Then probe with a question that helps you understand what’s really going on. ❌ “We can’t do that.” ✅ “Help me understand what’s driving that request.” That shift replaces reaction with curiosity and turns conflict into collaboration. Try it this week: When you feel pressure in a negotiation, take a breath, pause, and ask one question that starts with what or how. The difference isn’t theory. It’s tone, timing, and trust.
