Construction is well underway on the National Center for Opioid Research & Clinical Effectiveness (NCOR), a first-of-its-kind center in Arkansas and nationwide. This 65,000-square-foot facility in Little Rock will focus on understanding how the opioid crisis affects fetuses, newborns, developing children and adolescents, as well as pregnant and parenting individuals. Anchored in maternal and child health, NCOR will advance research, develop treatment programs, strengthen prevention efforts, and deepen community outreach and engagement. Led by director Alicia Allen, Ph.D., M.P.H., a distinguished behavioral epidemiologist, NCOR is positioned to change the trajectory of the opioid crisis and substance misuse nationwide. Arkansas Children’s pediatric otolaryngologist Dr. Robert Saadi successfully performed bilateral cochlear implant surgery on an 11-week-old patient, making her the youngest in Arkansas – and one of the youngest ever – to undergo this procedure. Cochlear implants work by bypassing the damaged parts of the inner ear and sending sound signals directly to the auditory nerve, giving children access to sound even with profound hearing loss. After a severe case of meningitis, the patient’s cochlea began to ossify, which happens when inflammation causes new bone to form and close the normal fluid-filled channel of the cochlea, placing her at high risk for permanent profound hearing loss, and it can prevent cochlear implantation in the future. When the implant was activated, her parents witnessed an unforgettable moment: the restoration of their daughter’s hearing and her responding to their voices for the first time since she had meningitis. Our pediatric gastroenterology team at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Jonesboro Clinic is celebrating one year of offering transnasal endoscopies (TNEs), officially completing more than 50 procedures! Unsedated TNE is a safe, efficient and less expensive alternative to traditional endoscopy, using a numbing agent instead of general anesthesia. This 20-minute procedure allows children to return to their favorite activities right away.
