In med tech innovation, closed-loop systems are one of the hottest concepts shaping the future of care. Devices with closed-loop systems use biofeedback sensing and real-time data to automatically fine-tune therapy, so they can respond to changes in activity, posture, or symptoms, without any manual input from the patient. As John Rivera, our VP of Product Development, explains: “Instead of patients having to change their amplitude or stimulation settings… the system should do it for them.” By removing the burden of constant device adjustments, closed-loop systems give patients more freedom to live their lives—while ensuring their therapy is always optimized. At huMannity, we’re working toward smarter, more adaptive solutions that put the patient experience at the center of innovation.

We pioneer life-enhancing medical technologies for undermet healthcare needs.
About us
huMannity Medtec (The Alfred E. Mann Foundation for Scientific Research) is a non-profit organization dedicated to pioneering life-enhancing medical technologies for undermet healthcare needs. At huMannity, we strive to find solutions for medical problems that often have few other treatments. In our non-profit environment, we are free to take on long-term, high-risk challenges as well as to develop technology that can benefit those who suffer from conditions that have smaller populations of patients and groups who may not receive the attention paid to higher-profile diseases or injuries. Our talented and diverse staff and our world-class research facility allow us to take development from the seed of an idea through prototyping and quality control all the way to manufacturing a device that can be used in a clinical trial. Lower burden is better care. When devices reduce manual adjustments, clinic visits, and guesswork, people live their lives with fewer interruptions and less stress. What this looks like: Auto-adjustment: sensing and responding in real time for steadier patient relief. Remote support: secure updates and virtual check-ins that save patient trips. Usability: clear interfaces and training that reduce patient errors. We advocate for features that sense, adapt, and support remote care so relief is steadier and days are simpler. See you at Neurotech Leaders Forum, Nov 5–6 (South San Francisco). huMannity MedTec’s Bob Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D. (Chairman & CEO) will speak on “Navigating the Valley of Death: Building a Sustainable Neuromodulation Business”. The session runs Day 1, 9:15–10:00 a.m. PT. This two-day forum brings neurotech executives, entrepreneurs, and investors together for practical sessions on funding, commercialization, BCIs, neuromodulation, and more. When we design a neuromodulation device to "talk" to the body, we’re asking some simple questions: 1) Where are we talking? Selectivity matters. Lead configuration, electrode design, and current steering help us reach the right nerves—and avoid the wrong ones—for stronger efficacy and fewer side effects. 2) How are we talking? As John Rivera, our Head of R&D, puts it, dosing is its own language: "Spatially, you’re looking at selectivity—how do you apply stimulation precisely around a nerve...Then there’s the temporal aspect—how do you dose it? Is it a continuous pulse, some kind of burst pattern, a complex waveform, or a combination of these? And how often should it be applied?” If you’re building implantables, learning the nerve’s “dialect” is where personalization starts.
