About us
Research within the School of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience is conducted across Neuroscience, Cardiovascular and Cell Signalling. Much of our research is inter-disciplinary, involving national and international collaboration with colleagues in other schools, universities and industry. This collaborative approach fosters a dynamic environment that is well supported with funding from many sources, particularly from the MRC, BBSRC, Wellcome Trust and British Heart Foundation.

University of Bristol - School of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience reposted this
It's only a few weeks until University of Bristol's annual Festival of Enterprise - our flagship event to celebrate and promote the ways in which we realise impact from our research through academic entrepreneurship and industry collaboration. Following our lively interview last week with Dr Robert Sharples, this week Innovation Officer Manda Baynes and I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr Richard Helyer of the University of Bristol - School of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience. As an education-focussed academic – Pathway 3 in Bristol terminology – Rich’s role involves a lot of teaching and assessment. Specifically, he teaches physiology to training medics, dentists, vets and science undergraduates and, in this role, makes extensive use of simulation – but not in the way that simulation is commonly used. Rich and his colleagues' approach brings a much more sophisticated and deeper understanding of the fundamental processes at work rather than the more simplistic "how to respond in this situation" approached used in many clinical training simulations. Having innovated extensively within the University and used these methods to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals and researchers with a deeper and more nuanced understanding of physiology, Rich saw an opportunity to take this innovation outside of the University and in doing so allow a much broader community of learners, and education professionals, to benefit. Read all about Rich's journey - which, like many academic entrepreneurs, is highly non-linear! - the importance of mentoring and being mentored - and his advice for other researchers, on our Enterprise and Innovation blog: https://lnkd.in/eC2iaTbi You can hear from Rich, Rob, and our other University Enterprise Fellows at the Festival of Enterprise on 4th June.
