Jonathan Mercier-Ganady put it perfectly when we spoke with him recently. . . “Start with something small and just play around with the compiler. You’ll probably fight the borrow checker at first, but don’t get discouraged—once you understand how ownership and memory work, everything gets much easier.” But the real turning point wasn’t technical. 𝗜𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁. 💡 “Don’t get discouraged. Once you understand how ownership and memory management work, everything clicks.” Rust has a learning curve, but it rewards persistence. If you’re coming from C++ and considering the switch, the path is simple: 👉 Build something small 👉 Let the compiler teach you 👉 Expect friction 👉 Stick with it The payoff? “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼'𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘁? 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿.” This quote from Herbert Wolverson says it all. Herbert has taught countless Rust workshops, and before the first lesson even begins, people are already terrified of lifetimes and the borrow checker. “I try really hard if it's a multi-day class to make sure they never see either of them the first day. Get them to the point that they're writing productive, useful things, and realize that, hey, you never actually once did memory management. You never once ran into a lifetime issue, because you didn't ever have to think about that.” Only on day two do they introduce “the bad news”: what Rust won’t let you do. The truth is, so much of the literature emphasizes that Rust is hard. And as Herbert says, “𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱, 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿.” A good reminder that the biggest blocker to learning Rust isn’t the syntax, it’s the story we tell ourselves about it. #RustLang #Programming #DeveloperCommunity #LearningRust #TechCareers

“𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁” 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲. When we spoke with Gabriella Burns, she shared what being self-taught really looked like for her, and it’s a story we hear often in this community. 𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲. A data analytics bootcamp introduced her to Python and Pandas, then Flask. From there, she found joy in fetching data from APIs, that small spark that led her into Rust, writing new endpoints for services at Moody's Analytics. It’s a great reminder that growth in tech rarely follows a straight line. It’s often side projects, late-night curiosity, and those “let’s just try this” moments that shape the best engineers.
