  • It's fantastic to see that the ban on wet wipes containing plastic will come into effect in England in 2027, and we eagerly anticipate the implementation of similar legislation here in Scotland. Scottish Water has been at the forefront of calling for the ban on wipes containing plastic since the launch of our Nature Calls campaign in 2022, supported by like-minded organisations in an effort to protect the planet and our communities🌍 As our climate changes, our sewers can become overwhelmed by heavier rainfall and wet wipes that are flushed are forced out of the waste water system, impacting you, your neighbours and nature🌳 A ban is important, but so is our behaviour. Please only ever flush the 3Ps and always bin the wipes💧 Find out more 🐟: https://bit.ly/4p3NWgv

Last week I hosted an incredible Futures For All remote work experience placement for Scottish Careers Week - designed to help students explore their future. As someone state-educated in Scotland, opportunities like this felt out of reach when I was a student. Being able to create this experience for young people across Scotland (and even a few in England!) was both important to me and a genuine honour. Huge thanks to the amazing employers who made this placement so impactful: Wendy Alletson from Scottish Water gave students a behind-the-scenes look at being the nation’s sole water provider, opened their eyes to diverse career pathways, and let us explore their brilliant Careers Map. Wendy also set a creative challenge that students presented back on the final day — and the results were outstanding. Ffion Baird from Morgan Sindall Construction showcased the often “hidden” roles in construction, highlighted sustainable initiatives, and helped students see just how varied and future-focused the industry is. Joanne Haddrick FRSA and Claire Cameron from NHS Scotland delivered fantastic sessions on career opportunities within Scotland’s biggest employer, introduced job descriptions and person specs, and supported students in recognising their own skills and how to apply them. Cyberhawk™ brought in team members from across the organisation to share their pathways, tackle a problem-solving task, and open brilliant conversations about changing direction and tackling imposter syndrome. Alexandra Haider from Sylvi inspired the group with her journey to finding work she genuinely loves — touching on self-motivation, strengths-based careers, start-ups, app building, and the power of AI. A special thank you to Nathalie Whelan (Wood) for supporting us all throughout! The students were engaged, creative, thoughtful and energetic throughout. Their ideas for Scottish Water’s challenge were bold, responsible, inspiring and caring — a perfect match. If these young minds are our future, we are absolutely in safe hands.

At COP30, water is being recognised as a fundamental driver of climate resilience and sustainable growth. I believe water efficiency is one of our greatest opportunities — delivering environmental benefit, innovation, and long-term value for customers and communities. Every litre we save reduces emissions, strengthens resilience, and supports a healthier future for generations to come. At Scottish Water, we remain committed to collaborating, investing, and leading the way in water-smart solutions that make a real and lasting difference.

Keeping Scotland’s world-class water flowing safely requires talented people and sustainable investment. At Scottish Water’s Camps Reservoir in Lanarkshire a new spillway is being built that will help maintain the reservoir that feeds tens of thousands of local homes. The location is stunning, but makes the build tricky. Access is challenging. So too is protecting the natural environment and wildlife. But the engineering team delivering the project have worked hard to learn from similar projects and innovate along the way. Thanks for hosting me Kenneth Brydon and GEORGE LESLIE.

In this blog released today, I talk about how the experiences of 2025 underline the need for us to change our relationship with water, and why we need to maintain steady investment to safeguard the interests of current and future generations. Scotland on Sunday carried a story on the same theme in yesterday's edition. https://lnkd.in/e6EATsK4 https://lnkd.in/e693niHy
