Systems telling people to break the law. Drive-throughs run by AI that somehow result in 18,000 cups of water being ordered...You name it, it’s happened. The pattern seems pretty clear. Companies race to automate the bits customers actually value, instead of using AI to support the humans who make the experience worth having in the first place. Take the drive-through example. Why replace the person taking the order when the real bottleneck is the time it takes to make the food? Technology should make things smoother, not create a new circus. If you’ve been hiring in public practice lately, you’ve probably noticed the talent pool isn’t what it used to be. Not thinner, exactly...just more selective, more switched-on, and far less interested in firms that feel stuck in 2018. We’re hearing the same themes again and again from candidates: 1. 𝘍𝘭𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭, 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘯. Hybrid isn’t a perk anymore; it’s the baseline. People want trust, not time-tracking. 2. 𝘋𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘴. Professionals are looking for clear pathways, progression, mentoring, secondments, even exposure to advisory work. “Just get your audit hours in” doesn’t cut it. 3. 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴. Old systems drive people mad. Practices investing in automation, AI-assisted audit tools, and smoother workflows have a recruiting advantage whether they realise it or not. 4. 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯. The firms winning talent are the ones where leadership talks to people, not at them. There’s no silver bullet for attracting great candidates, but there’s a simple truth: the best people are drawn to the best environments.
