“We’re pleased that the health committee have agreed to include the requirement that during any assessment a doctor must offer a referral for palliative care, to ensure that anyone requesting an assisted death can fully and meaningfully explore all end of life choices open to them. “As experts in end of life care with close connections to their communities, it is essential that hospices are meaningfully involved in shaping any significant changes to how that care is delivered. It is vital too that they have the flexibility to determine the nature and extent of their involvement in any future service." - Toby Porter, Chief Executive, Hospice UK Read our full response to the assisted dying bill amendment votes in Scottish parliament: https://lnkd.in/gYdjWiTg

“It keeps me awake at night.” That’s what Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of Moya Cole Hospice said about the hospice funding crisis on BBC Breakfast this morning. This comes as our data reveals that 380 beds are out of use in English hospices, as a result of insufficient funding. Dying people and their families deserve better. We need full funding of specialist palliative care provided by hospices so no one misses out on the vital care they need at the end of their lives. Everyone deserves the best possible care at the end of their lives. But right now, the communities most likely to miss out on healthcare during their lifetime, are also the least likely to get the best care at the end of life. Too many people in rural areas or facing hardship can't access the support they need. It is unacceptable that where you live or your financial situation impacts the end-of-life care you receive. We want to change this. And with your help, we can. Your donations to Hospice UK during the Big Give, will help to make sure everyone gets the right care when they need it most, regardless of their financial status or where they live. Pledge to donate, save the date and double the gift of giving today! #ChristmasAppeal
